Forthright

A product by MM Sanford

Advancement planning for Scouts BSA troops, from first campout to Eagle.

Forthright helps Scouts, parents and leaders plan each rank, track blue cards and counselors, and hand advancement to Scoutbook with a report.

Forthright is in a pilot with a few troops. It is free during the pilot, then $20 a month or $199 a year per troop.

Forthright in a minute: 68 seconds, with music and no narration. It shows the roster, advancement paths and blue cards, trip planning, the calendar, event sign-ups, Scout accounts and a troop website, using a made-up troop.

What it does

  • Plans the path to each rank, checked against the advancement rules
  • Runs blue cards and merit badge counselors in one place
  • Takes attendance at events and messages families
  • Builds the report your advancement chair uses to enter advancement in Scoutbook
  • Gives every troop a simple public recruiting website with a “Join us” form

What it doesn’t

  • Replace Scoutbook — Scoutbook remains the official record
  • Give a Scout under 13 their own login — a parent acts for them
  • Show ads, sell data, or track what you do after signing in
  • Speak for Scouting America — it is an independent product

Who it helps

One place for the whole troop.

  • Scouts and parents

Plan a path to the next rank. An AI assistant drafts the plan, and every plan is checked against the advancement rules before anyone relies on it.

  • Scoutmasters and advancement chairs

Run blue cards and merit badge counselors in one place. A blue card is the form that starts a merit badge. You see who asked, approve it and assign a counselor.

  • Merit badge counselors

See only the Scouts and badges assigned to you, and sign off each requirement as it is done.

  • Leaders

Take attendance at events and message families. When advancement is ready, Forthright builds a report you use to enter it in Scoutbook.

  • Every troop

Get a simple public recruiting website with a "Join us" form, so new families can find you and ask to visit.

Every feature, from Scout accounts to the equipment library, is on forthrightapp.com/features.

Safety and privacy

Built around Youth Protection.

Youth Protection in every conversation

Any conversation with a Scout includes an adult with current Youth Protection training and a parent or second adult. Scouts cannot message each other.

No logins for Scouts under 13

A Scout under 13 never has their own login. A parent acts for them, and parent consent is recorded.

Photos only with consent

Photos of Scouts go on a troop website only with media consent. Location data is removed from every photo.

No ads, no selling, nothing tracked in the app

Forthright shows no ads and never sells data. Nothing you do after signing in is tracked. Data is deleted on a published schedule.

The pilot

Free during the pilot.

After the pilot, Forthright costs $20 a month or $199 a year for the whole troop.

  1. 1 Ask to join the pilot on forthrightapp.com.
  2. 2 We set up your troop with you.
  3. 3 Try it with your leaders and families.
  4. 4 Tell us what to change.

Forthright is an independent product and is not affiliated with, sponsored or endorsed by Scouting America. Scouts BSA and Scoutbook are trademarks of Scouting America.
